Why Alder Creek?

Native alder grows low in wet, unstable ground: riverbanks, wetlands, and eroding shorelines. It does not need to dominate the canopy to matter. Growing in a thicket, it helps hold the bank together while supporting the life around it.

That is the spirit of the press. The work pays attention to the handoffs, relationships, and decisions that shape a family, an organization, or a community, often before anyone realizes they are carrying the load.

Written from inside the work.

The founder, Stephen Deason, holds an MBA and an MSc in Accounting from Emory University, completed doctoral coursework in business at Emory, holds a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He pursued graduate studies and completed the CityLabs program at Johns Hopkins University as a Dean's Scholar. He has spent more than thirty years working in health care, technology, and social enterprise. He serves on four nonprofit boards.

His wife, Melissa, says he does not so much pursue degrees as enroll in whatever interests him and stop once he has learned it, which she considers less a résumé than a diagnosis. Stephen has plans to continue confirming her diagnosis.

Stephen Deason also founded OPA Home Care, a home care and skilled nursing company in Roswell, Georgia.

More than a decade of his own recovery has shaped how closely he pays attention to systems that fail people quietly. The insight in these books comes from work that has been built, tested, and carried alongside real families, not from a distant view of the problem.

One question, a wider body of work.

Across its adult books and commentary, Alder Creek returns to one question: who ends up holding what nobody else will hold, and did that person choose the responsibility? The Operational Reliability books examine the coordination costs that land on families. Other work takes up business ownership, economics, recovery, and the systems surrounding difficult decisions.

The work takes different forms: fiction, narrative nonfiction, practical business writing, economics, and scholarly inquiry. Küche remains a world of its own, where children meet big questions through friendship, food, and shared imagination. The shared belief is simple: a good book can make the unseen easier to understand.
