Long bio

Stephen Deason is an applied economist, entrepreneur, and operator who writes about the systems people live in. His fiction and nonfiction draw on work in health care, recovery, business, and institutional decision-making.

At Alder Creek Editions, the Operational Reliability Series pairs business fiction with practical tools for families and providers managing complex care. The Weakest Link and The Invisible Architecture follow the systems people can fall through and the families left to manage the consequences.

The Family Integrator’s Handbook and Complaints Log Book give readers worksheets for preparing for conversations, documenting concerns, and keeping responsibilities clear when care moves between people and organizations.

His recovery titles include Don’t Panic, a guide for the first hours after someone stops drinking or using, and Free Help Directory. With Melissa Deason, he wrote Tools You Can Use on Your Own, Cravings and Hard Hours Workbook, and the One Day at a Time, Written Down gratitude journals.

Deason is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of OPA Home Care and Skilled Nursing and The OPA RASA Group, which includes OPA Staffing and OPA People. His work in health care, technology, and social enterprise informs the questions his fiction and nonfiction pursue: who carries the consequence when a system has no clear owner?

Deason’s writing has appeared in CPA Practice Advisor and Mission Matters: World’s Leading Entrepreneurs Reveal Their Top Tips to Success. His research on accounting and fraud, published in Accounting Horizons, has also been covered by Forbes.

He holds an MBA and an MSc in Accounting from Emory University, completed doctoral coursework in business at Emory, and holds a mathematics degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has also pursued graduate studies in health care at Johns Hopkins.

He publishes commentary on economics and institutional design at StephenDeason.com and publishes books, series, editions, and companion materials through Alder Creek Editions.
